Let Go, Recharge, Renew. Your Body & You Awaits
‘My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with passion, some compassion, some humour and some style’
– Maya Angelou –
I love this quote by Maya Angelou. Central to this pursuit is the vital aspect of managing and nurturing our energy levels. Our ability to thrive hinges on the care and cultivation of our inner vitality. By taking care of our energy, we can navigate life’s challenges. And do so
with resilience, creativity, and boundless enthusiasm.
In Chinese medicine, we think about our Kidneys as the powerhouse of our body and a storage place for our energy. The Kidneys store the ‘essence’ of who we are. This is our ancestral energy, derived from our parents and established at conception. We want to ensure we always nurture and look after our Kidneys well. We do this through our breathing, good quality sleep, good hydration, food, and how we move through life.
The first thing we do as newborns is take a nice, deep breath of air into our bodies. And when we are ready to leave this space and move on, when we die, we passively breathe out – the breath of life leaves us. Think about it; you can live for weeks without food, days without water, but how long without air? Not very long.
Oxygen as a source of energy
In Chinese medicine, we serve our body with energy from two major sources – the food we eat and the air we breathe. Air enters the body via your lungs and through your breath, you bring oxygen to your internal environment. Breathing then becomes a very important
part of our vitality. Our lungs are the organ connection. Enhancing and strengthening our lungs and our breath is the focus we want to give.
Deep Breathing
The best way to strengthen our lungs is to practice deep breathing. It sounds so simple, and yet most of us don’t breathe deeply at all. When you breathe deeply and with intention, you are flooding your cells and your brain with much-needed oxygen that is vital to all the different processes within your body.
I see it as an exchange with the external environment. Letting go of toxins and what is no longer needed. Allowing new, fresh energy to enter through the lungs. Enhancing your vitality and energy levels.
How to practice deep breathing
To support deep breathing, consider your posture and how you hold yourself. A collapsed chest does not allow for deep breathing to happen.
Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor. Lift up from the top of your head and open your chest, without forcing it. Allow your eyes to look ahead of you, rather than glancing down at the floor. Or close your eyes, if you like.
Relax your shoulders and let your arms hang naturally at your sides. Put a hand on your chest and another on your belly, and breathe. To start with, just check where your breath stops and become aware of your breathing.
Does it feel easy to breathe?
Is it a nice flow?
Do you feel out of breath?
Then take a deeper breath into your lungs, to the count of three, allowing the breath to travel all the way down to your belly and fill that space, feeling your belly expand. Now you are practising deep breathing. Now you are feeding your body the energy it needs from the air. Hold your breath for the count of three.
Breathe out through your mouth to the count of three, emptying your lungs completely. Then hold your breath to the count of three. Relax and repeat a few times. Drop your arms to your sides again and tune in to how you feel. Relaxed and recharged at the same time.
